Uber turns on electric vehicles in UK, starting with 50 cars in London

The race for who will take the lead in the next generation of automotive technology is on, and today Uber is kicking off a program that it hopes will help put it in pole position. Today, the transportation-on-demand behemoth is launching a new electric car service in the UK, in partnership with Nissan and China’s BYD, where it will offer leasing and purchase options for fully-electric cars (BYD E6s and Nissan Leafs) to its drivers, as well as include those vehicles in the mix of cars that it offers to passengers for journeys.
Uber is starting first with 50 vehicles in London and — if all goes as planned — it will expand the service to another UK city in coming months, and projects to have “hundreds” of all-electric vehicles on the roads in the UK by next year.

Uber’s move to expand into electric cars is significant for a few reasons: for one, it builds on the company’s efforts to make sure that whatever direction cars may be moving in the years ahead, it will have a place at the table as one of the companies leading the charge.
Uber may not (yet) be fully using its own self-driving vehicles, but as a large company in the transportation industry, it will help it have the ability to influence how these cars are made by third parties, and also give it a good route into being a middle man in the purchase and least of these vehicles, helping develop that business into a useful revenue stream to diversify from basic ride services.

Cisco Systems to cut 14,000 jobs: Report

San Jose, California-based Cisco is expected to announce the cuts within the next few weeks, the report said, as the company transition from its hardware roots into a software-centric organization. 

Cisco, which had more than 70,000 employees as of April 30, declined to comment.

Cisco Systems is laying off about 14,000 employees, representing nearly 20% of the network equipment maker's global workforce, technology news site CRN reported, citing sources close to the company.

A new self-destructing battery can power a simple electronic device for up to 15 minutes and then dissolve in water. It could pave the way for so-called transient power sources for scientific instruments or tools of espionage, according to a new study.

Engineers have developed a novel variety of battery capable of powering a simple electronic device, such as a four-function calculator, and then dissolving in water in half an hour. The new transient battery represents a marked improvement in voltage and disintegration time over its predecessors, the researchers said.
The lithium-ion battery, the first transient battery of its kind, is "very similar to a conventional battery," study co-author Reza Montazami, who heads the Advanced Materials Lab at Iowa State University

COMMON PROBLEM

Why does my date and time keep resetting when i shut down my computer?

 

Method 1:
a.    Click Start, type services.msc and hit ENTER.
b. Locate Windows Time.
c. Right-click and select Restart.
d.    Double click on Windows time and select the startup type as “automatic”.


Method 2:


Check and make sure that the date and time are correctly set in BIOS (Basic Input Output System).


If he not comfortable with changing the date and time in bios, you can contact the computer manufacturer for changing that.

Google Glass-Type Device To Soon Read Your Brain

  Using Google Glass, a team of researchers is developing a 'smart' portable system that will use functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) to measure a person's brain activity on the go.

The applications for fNIRS are endless -- from training air traffic controllers and drone operators to studying how students with disabilities learn best or why different people are more receptive to certain commercials.
"This is a new trend called neuroergonomics. It's the study of the brain at work -- cognitive neuroscience plus human factors," said Hasan Ayaz, associate research professor at Drexel University.  Since the research team found that Google Glass users experienced some cognitive tunnelling while navigating, they suggest that future studies identify other brain biomarkers induced by this "blindness" to the outside world.
